First visits
Pain
Calm it down.
Hands-on work on the guarded muscles and stiff joints, plus what to do at home between visits with ice and gentle stretches.
What We Treat
Turning your whole body to check the blind spot, because your neck won’t. The tightness that arrives by lunch and stays until bed. It’s fixable, and it starts with finding out what’s actually keeping it loaded, not with another guess.
Sound Familiar?
Two or more? You’re the one everyone else counts on, which is exactly how this ended up at the bottom of the list. Keep reading.
Why It Happens
Necks hurt for ordinary reasons. Hours at a screen with your head sitting an inch or two too far forward. The same reach, lift or twist repeated all day. Joints that stiffened with arthritis or with time. A disc or a joint pressing on a nerve, which is why the pain can travel into your arm as numbness or weakness. Stress that parks itself in your shoulders and stays there. And the pillow you’ve been meaning to replace for two years.
Any one of those on its own is manageable. Stacked together, they keep reloading the same tissue before it gets a chance to settle. Working out which combination is yours takes a cause-first evaluation: range of motion, hands-on checks of the joints, a screen for nerve irritation, posture, and how much endurance those muscles actually have. Guessing is the reason neck pain keeps coming back.
The Honest Truth
Nobody regrets starting too early. Plenty of people wish they hadn’t waited.
How We Fix It
Every plan has an endpoint. Here’s what the four phases look like for a neck, one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist, every visit.
First visits
Pain
Hands-on work on the guarded muscles and stiff joints, plus what to do at home between visits with ice and gentle stretches.
Early in your plan
Prime
Targeted mobility work and stretching return the motion your neck has been avoiding, so you can check the blind spot with your neck again.
Middle of your plan
Perform
The deep neck and upper back muscles get trained to hold your head up through a whole workday. That endurance is the part that keeps pain away.
The endpoint
Prevent
Monitor height, chair, phone habits and how you sleep all get sorted out, because the setup that started this is still waiting at home. That’s the endpoint, not another appointment.
Questions, Answered
In most cases gentle movement helps more than rest does. Hurt doesn’t always mean harm, and a neck that stops moving tends to get stiffer, not safer. Working out the right amount of the right movement for your neck is exactly what a licensed physical therapist does at your evaluation, then builds on as you improve. Nothing is forced, and nothing happens that you haven’t been walked through first.
If the pain radiates into your arms, brings numbness or weakness with it, or simply isn’t improving, get it checked. A mild strain often settles on its own. Something that keeps coming back usually has a cause nobody has looked for yet. You don’t need a referral to start. California Direct Access lets you attend physical therapy for up to 45 days or 12 visits, whichever comes first, before a physician sign-off is needed.
You’ll leave visit one with a plan that has an endpoint on it, so you’re not guessing. As a general guideline, 2–3 visits a week for 4–6 weeks is what gets the most out of care, and that’s a guideline, not a promise. Sessions run 30–60 minutes. We accept 14 insurance plans and check your benefits before you start, so you know the cost going in.
